FAQ
How do I care for an Encaustic artwork?
Encaustic artworks are durable and archival. The wax/resin is impervious to moisture, and any paint used in the artwork will naturally cure as time goes on. Encaustics will not yellow or darken, since they contain no oils or solvents. They are sensitive to heat, and their surface may be easily scratched or dented. The edges of your artwork should be protected as well.
Encaustic is stable at normal temperatures, and will be begin to soften and melt at about 120 degrees F. Hang your encaustic art out of direct sunlight and away from any sources of heat. Also note that at low temperatures (below freezing) the wax will become brittle and may crack.
Encaustics cure over the course of about 6 months as they are exposed to the air. Moisture may come to the surface of the work and cause “blooming” which is seen as a slight haze. You can gently buff the surface to remove the haze.
If your artwork becomes dusty you can gently wipe the surface with a soft cloth. The work should always be shiny, if it develops a haze buff it out, when the temperature is around 70 degrees. Buffing adds a sheen to the surface, and helps discourage dust buildup. Be careful when buffing surfaces with lots of texture.
Encaustic artworks can be stored at room temperature. I recommend wrapping in wax paper and then bubble wrap, with the bubbles out so they don’t imprint the work surface. A layer of cardboard on top of the bubble wrap will help insulate the piece.
I recommend that if you wish to frame the piece that it is not behind glass, since this can allow heat buildup which may cause the surface to distort. A floating frame is an excellent choice – it will protect the edges.
